New on the scene Dohm 961

I found this out so I thought I'd share.

In October ('98) I was watching the news on WKBT Channel 8 out of La
Crosse, WI. when a very quick segment on giant pumpkins passed by. I
missed the name so I contacted the television station and they gave me
the name of Jerry Dohm out of Eau Claire, WI.

I searched but found no email address but I did find a Gerald Dohm in
the white pages. I was able to get his address and I sent him a letter
explaining my interest. Tonight he called me on the phone and verified
that it was him that was featured in the news.

He told me that a nephew gave him some seeds to plant from his Peterson
261. This was his first year so he plowed up a spot where he had been
feeding round bales of hay for the past ten years to his thirty-some
horses.

He told me that they only got two respectable rains all summer so he had
water somewhat continuously (at one time 7 days straight without turning
off the sprinkler). He used Miracle Grow about every 10 days, put tarps
over the pumpkins which were on styrofoam but never used any chemicals
other than a bleach solution that he applied only to the pumpkin itself.

He grew three plants that produced a Dohm961 (I believe a new state
record), a Dohm811 and two on a plant at 500 and 460 pounds. He said he
never knew of any contests until after he was on TV so you didn't see
him at any.

He told me that he weighed his pumpkins at Toys Scrap & Salvage in Eau
Claire. He said he would sell the seed at 3 for $10. If you're
interested you can call him at 715-833-1385. The pumpkins supposedly
ranged from a thickness of 13" to 7" and appeared long with medium
height from what I remember from the news clip.

The only way I found out about him was through that 20-30 second news
clip.

Good luck to all of you. I've got to find a horse ranch.
