Pruning Questions

I sorta recall seeing on a post or a FAQ that one thing to do when pruning
is to cut off "suckers".
What are they?
Also, how far apart on the main vine should the secondary vines be?
Finally, I have some secondary vines that have stopped growing at about 2
feet with no female flowers in sight. Should I prune these?
