 George,

I don't know very much about the Ca in the soil but from what I have
read and from what other growers have shared with me is that Ca is
 essential for large pumpkins.

Now about the stump rot issue. How did the large roots look just under
the stump? My theory is fungus possibly develops under ground and
spreads along the root system just like any other bacteria. What I'm
wondering is if we use a fungicide that is systemic will this take care
of the fungus problem. A grower I talked with this year mentioned that
he had gummy stem blight on a stump and treated it with a fungicide and
had good results. Gummy stem blight is a surface fungus and can be
treated with topical fungicide. We used to use benomyl on a 14 interval
to control mildew and never had problems with stump rot but then again
benomyl is a systemic fungicide. So maybe we need to look into using a
systemic fungicide on a regular basis to control fungus problems but I
don't know if it will control fungus in the root system as well. It
should be getting to the roots as well. Anybody have anything to offer
 on this subject?

From another George (Brooks)

The rot on my plant was all above ground, I do not know if it was from insect
or disease. I was not watching this plant closely because it was the one I
had lost my Pumpkin on in early August. The rot appeared in late August.

Systemic fungicide: I do not believe in their use on edible plants and as fas
as I know they are not listed for use on Pumpkins. They make the entire plant
poisonous and that is not a risk I'm willing to take.
