Angela,
Not sure there is much of value I can add.
I prepared a plot around 800 sq ft and am trying the Brooks compost feeding
method as detailed on Duncan's page. Started two plants with two feeders and
one just wacked in the ground at the other end.
My favoured plant is the Andersen #815 but have a couple of Ryans #454
(local).
The Andersen main vine is now approaching the 4 m (13 ft) mark (growing
about 3 ft per week) and two female (unpollinated) flowers are visible near
the end of the main vine. I am curving the vine "S" now so the females will
be on the outer radius.
I have experienced some damage to leaves which I put down to insect pest and
have been more vigilant with insecticide since. Last year on the group there
was talk of motorised fogging machines so I traded in some unused equipment
and got a secondhand machine. It is a bit rough and held together with duct
tape but seems to do a good job.
I have been training the vine in the Xmas tree style. Currently most
secondaries are only about 4 ft long.
We experienced about 3 days of 100 degree heat so I installed some shade and
sprayers to help cope with that although the temperatures have been moderate
since then.
This year I got an article published in the local paper (me and my pumpkin)
and the jorno has been putting my tips in her column (so far weekly) so I am
hoping this will encourage local growers.
Currently I am concerned that I should be adding N to the patch but looking
at the leaves (Andersen) they are dark green so I feel that the levels must
be high enough. I also lost one fruit last year to blossom-end rot so intend
adding Calicum Nitrate as fruit grows but don't want to overdo the Nitrogen
in the process.
I have just bumped up the watering time on the computer but don't have any
feel for whether I am giving too little or too much. I feel I can't be too
far off as plant is growing well.
