Re: wild fescue.............

Forgot to add: another option is to rototill the heck out of the plot
& then cover w/ newspaper & mulch. (When I say "rototill the heck out
of it," I mean go over it until your arms fall off & there aren't any
big clumps of grass left. You may want to pause after your first
rototilling & collect the huge hunks of grass & take them off to your
compost pile, just to eliminate the possibility of the grass growing
back.) Rototilling isn't easy to do at this time of year in the
northern portions of N. America -- but whatever you do, don't do it just
after the first good thaw or thereabouts. If you don't wait till the
weather's consistently warmer & the ground's really thawed, you'll end
up creating a solid bed of undiggable clay. Ask me how I found out! You
may want to rototill in a whole bunch of manure, etc., & then newspaper
& mulch, although another thing to watch out for is really fresh manure.
Fresh chicken goo is likely to burn your plants, if not fry your eyballs
while you're applying it; fresh horse manure isn't as bad. For any kind
of manure, I'd see what I could round up now & let it age over the
winter.

Again, Good Luck!

Vicki
