T Brown,
Probably where the confusion comes in, is in the wording. A very strong
acid has a pH of 2. If you raise the ph, you are raising the number from say
2 to a pH of 7 with limestone. You are not raising the acidity. You are
raising the number on the pH scale. As you raise the pH number it becomes
less acidic.......when you reach the middle of the pH scale (7) you are
neutral ( not acidic...not basic). If you continue to add limestone you will
increase on the pH scale to...lets say 8. You are now basic ( the opposite of
acid. Most people agree that the target for your soil would be a pH number of
6.5 or 7.0. Take a soil test.....if your pH comes back at 5.5......raise the
pH to 6.5 with limestone. If the pH comes back at 8......lower the pH to 6.5
with sulfur or similar product.
