I have wondered about that, too. 

I have seen some pumpkins come out of the PCW, for instance that are very 
heavy for their size. The slow, easy growth in cool weather may play into 
that equation. 

From my experiences in the south, heat makes fruits bolt and mature early, 
resulting in thinner sidewalls and shorter growth periods than their northern 
counterparts. Also, internal fruit temps remain higher down here, even during 
the evening hours, due to extreme heat and sun intensity during the day and 
little relief from heat at night. This may play a role as well.
