Re: Heavy Hitter Help-Soil Heating Cables

Chris, my planting is done in late april while there is still much snow on a
ground that is still frozen. I find that after exposing the tops of my mounds
and putting down a layer of clear plastic, the ground will be warm enough to
work, one to two feet deep within 2 days of warm, sunny weather This is soil
that has been loosen the fall before through the application of compost, straw
and manure. My heating cables have also been installed the previous fall since
in April or early May there is no "soft" ground from which to make mounds. I
have tried cables in lengths of 6 feet to 60 feet and see no difference at that
time of the year when the plants are small. The ones that are installed now are
about 18 feet long and are buried about 4 inches deep with a spacing between
coils of the same measurement. I keep them plugged in most of the growing
season as the thermostats will control their operation. This seems to work for
me....Ken
