Who is the "Heavy Hitter of the Century"?
Since our number one criteria when growing
AG's is weight, I would suppose that the
grower who has produced the most weight
over the longest period of time would be our
"Heavy Hitter of the Century".
For example.......if we take a look at the
Top 100 pumpkins on the BackYardGardner
Top 1000 Pumpkins web page, we can get
a pretty good idea of who has the "highest
total poundage" in this elite group. The Top
1000 Pumpkins list covers 1992 to present.
The results using the above criteria are......
#1. Kirk Mombert with 5 pumpkins in the
Top 100 totaling a whopping 4490 lbs.
#2. Jack LaRue also with 5 pumpkins in the
Top 100, a close second, totaling 4454 lbs.
Does this make Kirk "The Heavy Hitter of the
Century"?
Do we add up the totals for the Top 500 or
Top 1000 ? Do we use other criteria ??
Also, what about "Grower of the Century"?
The criteria for this title would be more than
the weight of ones pumpkins. We would need
to consider such factors as.....helpfulness to
other growers, contributions to our sport,
attitude, generosity, sharing ideas, etc, etc.
Food for thought as we near the end of
this century.
