When I grew the 729 pounder on pure coarse sand, I used a constant
feed...watering 4 times a day to keep the sand moist. The CEC had to be very
low but the roots were constantly moist with a very dilute constant feed
solution similar to what a hydroponic grower might use. A normal soil would
be totally saturated if you watered it 4 times a day. I would say the CEC was
of little importance with what I was doing. If you have a CEC of 29 and
someone else has a 35, it probably doesn't make any difference as long as
you are putting on frequent low level doses of fertilizer.
