Pollination

Lowell, When we use a ripe male from the patch or from indoor storage, the
pollen is easy to get off and spread around. With high temps all the time
I was looking for away to extend that window of time and do all the
pollination in the evening. The imature males are hard to work with. The
pollen won't come off and we can't just leave the female flower open to let
insects do the work. Harold showed us last year that most insects eat or
remove most of the pollen. I take 4 young males that would have open in
24Hrs. One at a time I squash them with 3 fingers and a thumb and then
spread that juice on the female flower, top and sides. Then I tie the
flower shut. You have to be careful and do only one flower between washing
of hands or use disposable gloves to control the pollen. Roger
