clay soil verses organic material

I worked for large farming concerns in Huron county for 10 years mostly
clay loam some land had more clay some less. one 2000 acre section was
reclaimed swamp land bottomless organic material. great root vegetable
land and would grow a just OK crop of beans. Some land almost all clay not
as good as a mix. but I read some where about the 4by 4 by4 foot hole
theory of pumpkin growing that the clay out on the hole should be tilled in
with the top soil before layering the hole when filling it back in with
layers of compost soil manure and so on. Makes sense to me to make this
orclayganic soil to me it's just the thing to do. I think what is most
important is the clay underneath the last foot of the hole when filled
with organic material acts as a semi permeable holding area for water
between waterings and holds fertilizer that washes threw thats why when it
rains the fertilizer does its most good the layer of clay holds it there
but our small waterings don't bring it to the surface maybe we should dig a
circle around where we plant down to the clay and fill it with clay to make
the top of the holding area higher Chris Vossen section that is filled
with
