I would be very careful using any type of reflective devices under you
leaves. New leaves are very susceptible to heat and you could burn of all
of your new growth as well as burn up your growing tips!

I second that, I've found that even light colored hay will reflect more light
and burn the tips. I move the light colored mulch away from the tips when
the temps get above 90 and the soil seems to absorb some of the sunlight
protecting the plant.
