RE: drip irrigation systems

My experience has been that soaker hoses do tend to vary in their output as
you suggest -- higher output at the beginning and lower at the end of a
length of hose. Consequently, I try to keep the length of the hoses short,
running multiple lengths of soaker off of one "feeder" hose. The feeder is
not a soaker, but a stiff hose that runs the length of one side of my patch.
At about 16" intervals I attach a length of soaker hose that runs
perpendicular to the feeder all the way across the width of my patch. I
purchased the materials for this system at the local Wal-Mart last year,
made by Better Homes & Gardens. It worked better than my previous attempts
with other soaker hoses in the past.

Hope this helps,
Chris Wilbers

chris and list,
on the subject of soaker hoses, i purchased mine at the local giant
warehouse
supply store and found very erratic watering, usually much less water at the
end of the run...i think it was only a 25ft. lenght. are there better
quality
hoses that
apply a uniform volume of water throughout the length of the hose ? i have
seen drip
tapes advertised in catalogues. anyone know how this product differs from
soaker
hoses ? just trying to get all my preseason "ducks in a row"
