Back in business!
Friends:
After losing my patch to mosaic virus this past December, I proudly announce
that my season is off and running again with two seedlings in the ground!
I have been busy grooming my patch for Spring (Feb to us in FL). Beside
covering the soil with plastic to allow the sun to bake it off, I tilled,
amended the patch with organic matter (can one ever have enough?) and got a
soil test done. I also sprayed twice with Diazinon to be certain that the bug
population was in check. Rationale: biting insects spread mosaic; spraying
will keep insects down. This aggressive spray program may be my only defense
against the viruses which have been so devastating here in the past.
Seed selection was too tough of a decision to make, so I put all my seeds
into a large bag, covered my eyes and agreed to grow whatever I selected.
How's that for throwing caution to the wind?
This year's seeds, the Hunt 991 (449 Marcellus X 935 Lloyd) and the Mombert
749 (946.5 Geerts X Mombert 866) will work their wonders. With any luck, I'll
give Tim a run for the FL record. Always thinking positively.
