Germination box
The sunshine outside today makes me think about planting time. That means
germinating seeds. Last year I cooked several good seeds by getting them too
hot using the "ice chest with bottles of hot water method." At the Elk Grove
meeting one of the panel members (I think a wise older fellow from Napa who
has won several first places in major competitions) said he puts his potted
seeds in a styrofoam chest and warms it with a fifteen watt electirc light
bulb, checking the temp from time to time with a thermometer and cracking the
lid as necessary to maintain 85 degrees. I thought, "Where can I get a
fifteen watt bulb and how can I run it too a an ice chest?" I do not want to
go out and buy any new stuff to use for six days a year. I am an urban grower
with limited sotrage space as well as growing space.
So - The Answer.
The outdoor Christmas lights.
They come already wired. You can add or subtract the number of bulbs to
maintain any temperature you want.
There. This may be my one claim to the Hall of Fame.
I know for some of you guys this will not work because you will have to get a
ladder and take down the lights you have left up from 1998.
Has anyone tried this before?
John of Zone 8 or 9 and maybe 7 if La Nina blows.
