Bingo! Sand under or around the pumpkin sounds like a great way to both
cushion the fruit and increase drainage for reducing the risk of water
related maladies. I am amazed how many pumpkin growing areas that are
pictured online, actually show no extravagant equipment or soil design
changes from just the usual tilled planting area. Other than George Brooks
setup that is.

Once your fruit is set and positioned put sand underneath the fruit. Build a
little "sand platform". This has worked well for me.
