Germination

Hello List,
How many seeds should I germinate to end up with 3 vines (3 hills)? My gut
says three per hill, or 9 plants, and then thinning down to the strongest
single vine in each hill, a couple of weeks after transplant into the garden.
I also have seen some people on the list who start "back-up" seeds two weeks
later, is this standard? If so, how many "back-up" seedlings should be started
to support the end result of 3 vines?
Lastly, do the vines only bear male or female flowers, or are they mixed on the
same vine?
