My guess is as follows: In the following 7 hierarchies; 1190 Checkon, 1131 Checkon, 1109 Skinner, 1096.8 Pukos, 1064.5 Needham, 1061 Zehr, and the 1056.5 Dueck I see a pattern in the second generation back. (I noticed that none of the second generation (grandparents) have duplicate parents.  There no selfed or repeated situations like in the 1140 Stelts where there are two 801.5 Stelts in the second generation.
 
I am assuming that the success of these plants was based on a wide gene pool with 4 different seeds contributing in the second generation. I may be all wet about this in relation to pumpkins, but in the purebred Maine Coon Cats I have raised for the last 19 years we always look for something like this as a wonderful diverse outcross for the lines. I realize that pumpkins do not exhibit the traits of the cross until yet another generation, so perhaps that rule is what proves it as they are another generation removed.
 
This year I am looking at seeds to plant for that have the same situation in the second generation, but I plan to bounce these ideas off of heavy hitters when we have our northwest seminar.

In case you are bored and would like to do some fun pumpkin research, here's a little something for you to do. 
 
Go to the AGGC and have a look at hierarchy of the first 11 pumpkins under pumpkin info.  These are the largest 11 pumpkins recorded on the site.   Seven of these beauties have something in common that may have some considerable signifigance to it.  Here's a hint-  It relates to hybrid vigor.
 
Unfortunately I cannot offer a prize for the right answer, as I do not have much to offer.   I will have to make up for that next year.....
