I live close to niagara falls and I too live in clay. I started two years
ago and you have too amend the soil every year. I had two monsters last year
and a 632 the first year on a side vine. I helped Chris Dueck with his
garden last year and he grew a 1056.5. So don't be discourage I really don't
think its a disadvantage, Larry and Gerry Checkon also grow in clay. First
thing to do is break it up with a rototiller really good. Then add about 100
pounds of agricultural Gypsium. This breaks up the clay. I added lots of
topsoil about 6 inches on top and then added lots of leaves, manure and last
fall i added about two dump trucks full of old potting soil discarded by the
greenhouses around here. Of course I use Ironite and lots of fertilizer, but
don't over water because the clay retains water. You have too add the leaves
manure and Gypsium too your soil every year, grass clippings help too. I
hope this helps.
