In 1998, in Streamwood, IL, there was a guy that tried that.  He grew his
vines on two foot high piles of mushroom compost.  That way the vine was
much higher than the pumpkin, thus - no stem stress.  Said he didn't even
have to cut the roots on either side of the pumpkins.  Claimed to grow three
that way from the 1996 Zehr 1061 seed.
