Just a little tip about hand pollinating for some of the new growers.
When you cover your chosen flowers the night before you want to pollinate in
the morning. Some growers use plastic bags others use cheese cloth and some
even use paper bags or plastic bags.I use my wifes pantyhose .LOL.Ya i know
what some of you are thinking.He's off the deep end. he's not normal.But all
jokeing aside it works great.Just cut the feet portion off and you've got two
covers. slip them gently over the blossems the night before thay are due to
open.I cover the female and 4 or five males to pollinate and use every male
flower i cover on that single female flower to get the maximum amount of
pollin in the female flower.You can even use a small paint brush to transfer
the pollin. In the early morning i go out to the patch and slide the covers
off the males(1 at a time as i snip the male from the vine)and bring it over
to the pumpkin or female im pollinating.Peel off the petal part and pollinate
the female.The coverd flowers might appear closed still but as soon as i
pull the cover off it springs open.
