Pumpkin Growers and Hospitality
List,
What a great group we are lucky to be a part of. A few weeks ago I
returned from a cross country trip and would like to acknowledge the
hospitality of the growers and their families that I had the privilege to
meet.
The trip started in the LA California area where Bob Troy from Torrance
invited me to his home. Bob and I then joined up with Kevin Smith from
Torrance for lunch at a local restaurant. Bob and Kevin, the two local
pumpkin growers, had never met and only lived a few miles from each other. We
had a great lunch, shared pictures and stories, and talked pumpkins it seems
to the cows came home. We then went on a patch tour of Bob's and Kevin's home
patch's. Much info was shared and exchanged, along with seeds among us.
The following day I flew to Springfield, MO. There I meet up with Chris
Wilburs and his lovely wife and children. They had me over for dinner and
shared their beautiful home with me. Chris is lucky to have two children
Helen and Henry that are future pumpkin growers in the making. Watch for
Helen's name in the near future!
A few days later Chris and I went to the home of the MO. Record Holder,
Dan Westfall. There we meet up with his daughter Denise and his wife. We all
talked Pumpkins, shared stories and seeds, and learned a hole lot why Dan is
the Record Holder. Dan and I met up a few days later when he took me shopping
for a sprinkler system. I was able to benefit from Dan's hard work in
designing a system. I came back to CT. with a system in my suitcase! I wonder
what airport security thought of my bags, I bet they got searched!
Anyhow, I'd like to thank everyone who made my trip a lot of fun. It's
great to know what a bunch of swell people make up our sport\hobby. I
understand that soon there will be a 12 step program for us! See you at that
seminar!
