Osmocote fertilizer and patch update

Hi, everyone.

While shopping at Lowe's today, I bought a slow release fertilizer called
Osmocote. Nothing new, just new to me for AG! It's a vegetable formula that
feeds by timed release with one application lasting 4 months. This was the
hook that got me to buy it as I have a lot of plants to manage this season.

It is a 14-14-14 formula that is recommended for heavy feeding vegetables,
like pumpkins and melons. Anyone have any experience with Osmocote used as an
AG fert? If so, I would welcome your knowledge. I have used Peter's 20-20-20
blue powder mixed into water once weekly in the past, so will see if Osmocote
provides better results after this season ends.

My patch is off to a great start. Most seedlings are sprouting third leaves,
while some are newly germinating. Days are in the mid 80 range, with nights
in the mid 60's. The orange blossoms in my next door neighbor's yard are
blooming and provide the lovely perfume that wafts through the air. This is
the best time of year to enjoy Florida outside.

I will have two AG patches to manage this season. The first patch to go in
has the Walters 641 (Holland 657X Stelts 801.5), Walters 480 (Stelts 801.5X
Checkon 815). Also have two seedlings from a sib of the 480, Walters 319.

Patch #2 will have another Walters 641, the Cramer 824 (Greer 1006XHunt 991)
the Maston 570 (Greer 1006 X Stelts 801.5) and a Needham 1064.5 (Hester 862.5
X 940 Mombert).

Kudos to Brad Walters of Indiana, whose kindness is remarkable. He was
concerned that the cool FL weather last week was preventing my seeds from
germination, so he shipped me 5 seedlings Fed X overnight!! A win-win for me,
as I spared his test seedlings from the compost heap (he still has snow) and
the arrival of his seedlings prompted mine to germinate! It's feast or famine
sometimes, now I have seedlings to spare.

Good luck to all this season and I'll post updates when I have more to tell.

Barb
