Re: Long Gourd

Dan,

If this is so I will be personally honored.  Developing the long gourd for competition was a 6 yr. commitment for me.  It took 3 crosses and 5 selections to get to the world record of 99 inches back in 1990.  Everyone thought I was crazy; my neighbors laughed and some pumpkin growers thought it was unnatural!  Then, my brother Peter set (correct me if I'm wrong) the current world record of 110 5/8 inches in 1994 using seed from the 99 incher.  It has continued to be a great challenge and this acceptance will ensure that the "Collins Long GOURD" is both revered and remembered.  Just today a reporter asked me "
Did you invent challenge gardening?".  Well, I guess a good part of it!

You can join the World Pumpkin Confederation for $5/yr as a supporting member - that is supporting the voice of competitive gardening through my voice.  Who knows what the future will hold.

You can purchase seed of the "Collins Long GOURD" directly from the developer by logging onto

We are updating the site and there are some new items already available - NEW 7X7 Giant Pumpkin Tarp - NEW 2X4 Watermelon Tarp - WPC Literature Memorabilia - Special Selection seeds, including some great pumpkin crosses and Long GOURD seed by Peter Waterman and more.

If you'd like a hard copy of the 2002 color brochure just drop me an email with your address - I'll know what its for!  Snail mail: P & P Seed Co 56 E Union St Hamburg NY 14075-5007

In the quest for the development of the Long Gourd variety there were friends that supported my efforts.  I would like to name a few now:  Hugh & John Ritz, Andy Waterman, George Stayner (and Wendy), my entire family.  There is no PVP for this variety, as I decided early on that I wanted to do something for competitive gardening that benefited all.  I would appreciate supplying you with the best seed available and can offer just that.  Someday I will write that book!  Thank you all.

Ray Waterman
