Plans shot to heck

I actually have a growing question! I was planning on using a
pre-emergent herbicide for local weed control (Surflan). But today at
work I was asking one of our PCA's about the problems that I may
encounter and he told me that the tap roots may not live. Well this
blows my easy weed control out of the water unless someone has tried a
pre-emergent and had success with it?
