Top 250 Pumpkins for 2002
I just completed a summary of the top 250 officially weighed pumpkins
for 2002. In this summary, I included all pumpkins weighed on accurate
scales that were sound and not disqualified for holes or rot. I did not
include fruit that was ruled squash.
Here are some interesting stats that come from the summary:
1. Minimum Weight: The bar is obviously rising. To be in the top 250
fruit last year you had to beat 709 pounds. In 2001, 682 pounds would
have qualified you.
2. Average Weight: Even more impressive - the average weight of the top
250 fruit increased 52 pounds over the 2001 average!
Average Weight of Top 250 Pumpkins:
2001 Average: 807 lbs
2002 Average: 859 lbs
3. US vs Canada: The percentage of the top 250 fruit grown by our
neighbors in that small cold country up north is increasing!
Percent of top 250 Pumpkins grown by Canadians:
2001: 26%
2002: 32%
4. Half Ton Club: The number of fruit grown over 1,000 pounds has more
than doubled in one year!!
Number of 1,000+ pumpkins:
2001 - 16
2002 - 37
I like to give credit to the AGGC database for much of the data used in
this summary and the official weigh-off records listed on the pumpkinnook
site.
