So you want to grow a pumpkin that will rank in the top 1,000
ever grown? In 2003 you better grow one over 740 pounds to
qualify. Three years ago a 608 pounder would have done the
job.
I've updated my Top 1,000 list of Official Pumpkins to include
last year's crop. This list contains all known weighed
pumpkins but excludes pumpkins disqualified for rot or holes
and fruit that were ruled squash.
Here are some interesting stats I gleaned from the list:
1. World Record Free-Fall - Since Dave Stelts grew his world
record of 1,140 pounds just two years ago, 14 official pumpkins
have been grown surpassing that mark.
2. Half Ton Club - 50% of all pumpkins grown over 1,000 pounds
were grown last year alone. 85% of all pumpkins over 1,000
pounds were grown in the last three years. (62 of 73)
1,000 pounders 2000: 9
1,000 pounders 2001: 16
1,000 pounders 2002: 37
3. Top Regions: Would it surprise you that most big ones come
from northern regions? No - well, where are the hot spots? The
following shows the number of the top 1,000 pumpkins grown in
the top producing states or provinces:
1st: Ontario - 212
2nd: Washington - 122
3rd: California - 72 (5 from yours truly)
4th: Ohio and Oregon - 65 each
5th: Nova Scotia - 55
See where you rank! The Top 1,000 summary can be found at:
