My best plant ever also was - what else - the 846 Calai. At
three days from germination - I knew that this plant had
something magic in it. It's growth rate was so manic that I
was afraid to get too close to the plant for fear it would
ensnare me with it's groping tendrils. I couldn't put a spade
in the ground within 10 feet of the plant - even when it was
small - without bringing up a shovel full of it's wiggling
dragon roots.
I did just about everything wrong to this plant to kill it
including over fertilizing, under watering and not spraying,
and it still grew my 831. This fruit was growing incredibly
fast and was headed to some big numbers until some kind of stem
rot hit which stopped it early.
My 995 Carter plant which is a 846 off-spring was also pretty
rambunctious. I was convinced that it was an alien seed zapped
here from the distant planet Pluto. Very much like the mother
plant. I managed to slap this one with too much nitrogen and it
kept aborting fruit - until I gave up on it entirely. A fruit
set all by itself 18 feet out on the main which I pretty much
ignored and harvested early. It ended up at a rock solid 910
pounds. (13% heavy) My best official fruit that year.
The worst environmental obstacle these two plants had to deal
with was unfortunately - me.
I've had other decent plants, but these two really stood out
from the crowd.
