Tad with the Cub Scouts
Just wanted make a mention of Harris Seed Co.
They have for the last 2 years donated about 3k corn seeds to our Cub
Pack so we could attempt to plant a Corn Maze.
I do not know if you want to put this in the digest.

If someone took a 723 Bobier or an 846 Calai and selfed them, what are
the
odds that the seed produced in this manner (F2) would be as good as the
original seed, one in 50 or one in 1000? I know this has been covered
elsewhere but
I have never seen a number relating to the possibility for seed.

This is a great question.
But I'd have to say the chances are better than germinating the same
seed
after is has turned 18 years old if the trying is outside of the sterile
lab
environment.

Marv: Good question. I would suppose the answer is tied closely with the
degree of homozygosity of the seed to start with. The more homozygous
the seed, the more likely offspring will exhibit the same traits. A
related question: if a 723x846 is a good cross, then would a 1130
Hilstolsky (723xself) x 735 Pukos (846xself) be a better one?

Does a pumpkin flower have to be pollinated for the pumpkin to grow? I
have
a pumpkin which started to flower then stopped with half the flower
open.
The petals were never really bright, clsoed and died off, but the
pumpkin
continues to survive. Could I just get a pumpkin without seeds?
