Hey Steve,
I found Big Zack at http://www.heirloomtomatoes.com
They are sold and delivered as plants. They are kind of pricy but as you
know, you only need a few Big Zack. It is OK with me to talk maters.

There is nothing like Big Zac but you can only get it from Totally

Ryan, I hate to break the news to you, but the seeds you bought might,
just
might, grow a 3-4 hundred lb fruit, if you are real lucky.
If you want BIG pumpkins, you need SEEDS from a BIG pumpkin.
Ask here for seeds here, and you shall receive(yeah, verily) seeds from a
big
one.
I've been there, done that with the store-bought seeds.
Where do you live? There are growers clubs in just about state and
province
that can help you.
Steve.

This year will be my first attempt at growing a giant. I've read up on
the
subject quite a bit, but I've got a question about about where to get the
best
seeds. I've got room to grow two plants, and I'm hoping to get a couple
of 500 pounders. Is the packets of "Dills Atlantic Giant" seeds I bought
going to produce what I'm looking for? I appreciate any advice, Thanks,
Ryan

I think my soil was too wet last year. I also tried the wet paper towel
method. I made the mistake of trying to remove the seeds from the paper
towels prior to planting in soil. This year I will use the paper towel
method again and plant the paper towel in the soil rather than removing
the seeds from it. I used a heating pad for the seeds, putting a towel
and tray between the pad and seeds. i also used a heater in the room set
to 80 degrees. I think this year I may hang a florescent light directly
over the seedlings once they pop out of the soil. What kind of light do
you use?

Debbie,
I see you are in IL. I am in Indiana and start my seeds inside @ Mid
April-1st of May. Try starting them in a good sized pot so you have one
transplant to your outside soil. Keep your temps warm during germination.
I
found an old waterbed heater. Make sure if you use one, that you keep a
layer of water over the heater. I fill a tray to 2 in. of water that is
set
on the heater. Then put in a layer of gravel so your pumpkin pot is not
submersed in water. I keep mine at 75-80. Remember that wet soil causes
problems. Wet and cool soil is even worse. Hope this helps.

Florescents can provide the proper spectrum if you use a grow bulb.
However,
they do not put off much heat. I use a 450 watt high pressure sodium
setup.
It may be overkill but I also start most of my other garden seeds indoors.
Try lightly sanding the edges of your seeds with a nail file or some fine
grit sandpaper. This may help you with germination. Cucurbit seeds are
usually fairly easy to germinate. Concentrate on your soil temp.

I gave up on the paper towel and baggie method years ago, File seeds do
not
file tip, soak a good 2 hours,( I also add a few drops of H2O2 to cup of
water) place seed in pot with sterile potting soil, cover pot with
plastic
cover, I use cake pan top put pot on germ-pad my pad has a rack that keeps
pots directly off pad. The cover helps hold in heat and humidity.
The seed will take in enough water in the two hours to germ, be watchful
that the soil does not dry out but no need to soak it.
Works for me.
