I recently sent some interested Gainesville Florida growers some of my
459 seeds - plus some seed that Harold Baird was kind enough to give me
specially for these folks...One of the growers sent me these "Indian
Bullets" he calls them (see picture)....while us lay people usually call
them arrow heads...there pretty neat...sharp...with different
colors...."and weren't made yesterday" as he states...
I thought I'd share this with the group...and also mention I'd consider
trading these "Bullets" sraight up (or even up) for two 567.5 Mombert
seeds myself..if there are any left to be had...Just kidding mostly...
just trying generate something for the mailing list - as things seem to
be pretty slow....
I hope to get started with my pumpkin seeds this week - and may be able
to make updates with the video camera if the group doesn't mind
too much...I have some good seed stock and am really losing a lot of
sleep dreaming over them - so I have to get started soon anyway..
I recently posted a picture of me with a 100# "monster" I grew from
August thru Dec '96 ( a Jack Larue 764 seed/parent)....I had lots of
trouble and really gave a poor effort..but I'm really pysched for this
upcoming season!...so maybe things can get a lot better..
Al Eaton (one of the Worlds Top Growers) "dropped by" to help me
carve/cut open this beauty last week (I used this pumpkin as a landamrk
to find my house - and it worked pretty well too)...and a good number of
the seeds had already sprouted...many, oddly, with green sprouts....
since Al and I just made some great inprovements to my (little) garden -
I just "direct?" seeded some of them...most of the already sprouted
ones are looking ruff...but I think some of the ones that weren't open
at the time...have just sprouted recently and dont look too bad...so the
"race" is somewhat on.... I dont have much hope for these...but its nice
to see a few seedlings going in any event....
Al Eaton, by the way, has helped me considerably with my giant pumpkin
growing endeavors...(and he's finally on the net too)...he was really a
big part of my 96' January-June 459# new state record first ever
pumpkin... He was even generous enough to invite me to the 96 Ottawa
weigh-off...and I can't thank him enough for this generousity,
experience, and opportunity! I certainly had a great time and learned
tons!!! Farmer Gus Saunders also made me feel very welcome and part of
the weigh-off...working me into the lifting crew...wow what an
experence!...The whole trip was just great!!!
I feel fortunate to partically return this generousity with Al and
Sharon Eaton recently visiting Florida and staying a few days here. I
think they had a great time and soaked up plently of sun - at least Al's
forehead sure seemed to show it. Once again I was able to learn a little
more - and we had some good talks about this upcoming season....and the
success of last years as well. This I can't start to explain because
there is so much good information and wealth...
Well, just a little peek at whats happening in cold fridig Florida...I
thought it was going to snow today....it barely reached 80 degrees
...but it supposed to warm up all week...so I hope to get planting very
soon!... The seeds I have gathered look so good - I'm almost afraid to
even start them...
Well, I'll try to keep everyone posted if there aren't too many
objections... I can't "weight" to see what happens this season with all
the growers...
Once again...If your not a member of the Ottawa - St.Lawerence Growers
group...I feel your really missing a good insight and a great number of
other resources towards growing these giants... Lots of great
information and more to be had....at a great small price... I offered
the Gainesville growers a refund if they weren't motivated, educated,
and excited more thru this membership in growing these giants...and I am
very tempted to do the same with this mailing list as well..your really
missing the boat if your not getting in on this info.... Contact me if
you do not know how to join by now..
Thanks again for putting up with my ramblings...
All the Best to everyone this season...
Take Care,
Tim Canniff - Cortez, Florida
