Hello All,
I am a neophyte to the world of giant pumpkins and have been lurking on the
list for a while. I've been sesrching the net for about a month now and like
most of you have got the itch to get started as only a beginner can get.
This northeast zone 5 however is going to require some restraint for a while
yet.
My research so far has convinced me that to really get a big one good seed
is requisite. So far I've received a gift form Joel Holland and am anxiously
awaiting a reply from Nathan Zehr. I've also placed an order to Dill's
through Frank Bray. I would greatly appreciate any other contacts to obtain
seed.
I am an avid vegetable gardener for some time but one of my least enjoyable
tasks has always been weeding. I use a lot of plastic as well as organic
mulches and am not adverse to moderate use of chemicals. Plastic doesn't
seem to be a good choice for the pumpkin patch especially if I am going to
cover vines to encourage secondary root growth. I have been advised that a
good pre treatment with Round Up prior to tillage is a good plan...?? Does
anyone know of a good pre-emergent herbicide that can be safely used with
pumpkins and a planned peripheral wind breaker of sweet corn around the
patch? Thanks in advance.
Ciao, John
