Beth:
I wouldn't be quick to rule out a home near a golf course, but would certainly
be concerned if the yard bordered a fairway. Golf course maintenance has been
the subject of much debate here in FL, as the best chemicals for the greens
are toxic to the environment and seep into ground water. Temik was one of
those chemicals in question that is carcinogenic. We Floridians have probably
been drinking water laced with Temik for years (sadly). Also, it wouldn't
surprise me if they used 2-4-D. Count on it.
It was I who posted the questions earlier regarding Atrazine in the Miracle
Gro weed and feed formula. I received an overwhleming negative response. This
component is persistent and remains in the soil for a year or more.
I will tell you from my father-in-law's experience, atrazine killed his
vegetable garden. He put weed and feed on his lawn about 3 months prior to
tilling up a portion of his backyard for his garden. He turned over the soil,
added some soil enhancers and set out plants he purchased from the garden
shop. They began to look ill and within a week or so, were dead. When he
returned to the garden shop to describe his plight, it was then he learned
what went wrong.
The garden shop advised him to water the hell out of the area for about a
month, and try again. He did, but never really got anything. I saw his
pathetic garden and was sad that nothing grew but corn. His tomatoes were
slaughtered and his peppers looked like misshapen golf balls.
I don't know how much input you have in the decision making process of home
selection, but your pumpkin plants would be much better off in a place with a
lot of open sun away from commercial golf course management.
Just my humble opinion.
