Re: Happy Waitangi Day

Beth,

February 6 is the national day of colonial celebration in Aotearoa
(New Zealand). It is the Anniversary of the
signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi). This treaty is
considered to be the basis for the
foundation of the modern State. It accorded rights to British settlers,
primarily to be allowed to come to
Aotearoa and it guaranteed that the sealer state would honour the
existing sovereign rights of the Maoris (the
indigenous people of Aotearoa) primarily to their own lives but also,
specifically, to their own land, fisheries,
forests and other treasures.

Shame on you down under folks. I'm a New Englander fer chrissakes!
