A plant physiologist would be best.  Irradiating pumpkin seeds will produce
mutations and you are right about not risking your best seed.  Simple Xrays or
cobalt   in the right doses, of which we are unaware, will probably do the
trick.  Space to plant pumpkin plants is important.  Who has room enough and
resources enough to plant extra irradiated plants?  When you mutate you
probably get garbage or you may get kilotons.  When you selectively evolve by
pollination and crosses you don't usually get garbage.  It's like comparing a
lottery ticket to the stock market.  Both are investments.  You win more with
the stock market.  You lose a lot with the lottery,  but you might get struck
by lightning just that one time.
