Actually I don’t plant the Pumpkins any earlier even if the weather is warm.
Reason being they will out grow their protection before all danger of frost
has passed, (5/25). They go in the ground around 4/17 +/- 3 days.
What an early till does do:
Lets me till in the Winter Rye so it’s gets a chance to decompose before
planting so it doesn’t interfere with germination.
Lets the lime get working.
Increases the drainage so the soil dries out easy if the weather turns bad.
Increases the warmth of the soil.
Lets it warm up faster after a late snow storm.
I can plant my Pea’s in the Pumpkin patch early so they don’t get overtaken by
the Pumpkin.
I do have an advantage, my garden is on a plateau that’s makes it like a giant
raised bed that lets me do all this very early in the season.
Well my Crocus are in bloom and the Red Wing Blackbirds are returning, can’t
be long now.
George
