Many fruit and vegetable crops that we grow here in Wisconsin tick on
predictable biological time clocks. Some strictly by accumulation of
degree days, some by changes in photoperiod, and still others by climactic
factors like temperature, water, and cloudiness. I don't know exactly
what mechanism AGS tick on, but I would guess its a combination of several.
The general rule of 120-150 days seems pretty reasonable to what I've
seen. I know prolonged hot weather will "stress" them into a shorter
lifespan, and moderate slow growth can help them approach the longer end of
the term. I don't have hot weather growing conditions here so I can't
make commments based on my personal experience, but I would think that you
would want to time your planting date so that the fruit pollenation and
enlargement stages fall in decent "moderate" growing conditions.......just
my thought,
Rick
