Pat:
I think your question is a good one. Pumpkin vines grow until they have
ripened fruit or are adversely affected or killed by limiting factors
(insects, fungus, poor weather, lack of nutrients, lack of water, frost,
etc.).
Not to plug any one book, but Don Langevin's softcover book "How to Grow World
Class Giant Pumpkins" covers this subject well. The book outlines the care of
the plant during the leaf and root growth stage (60-70 days), and then the
differing strategies to enhance fruit growth period (70-80 days).
Additionally, information is provided with respects to controlling the
limiting factors so that you maximize your results.
I have found this a most useful reference tool. Weigh-off guidelines, two
famous pumpkin measurement formulas are provided, as well as soil composition
and nutrient information, insect control and many other important growing
tips.
The book also has comprehensive information on the weigh-off sites, Pumpkin
Grower's Associations, seed sources and profiles on most of the "heavy
hitters".
Pat, you and I live in areas with growing seasons that are perpetual. We will
have our share of bug and fungus challenges, but other factors are working in
our favor....water, long days of bright sunlight, warm soil......we can and
will do this.
Going in with eyes open and with the advice of the group readily available, we
should be psyched about our projects.
Keep in touch and e-mail me if you want more info on how to obtain Don's very
valuable book.
