George,
Are you willing to share the "experimental Organic fertilizer I've
been testing" that you mention.
I have been growing AG's 4 years in the same plot (space for one
plant). Typically about 1000lbs of pumpkin from one plant.
Last year was my best with 507 (and a 410); 1997 - 2 Blow outs big
one on track for over 500, 1996 best was 410 (1000 total lbs.), 1995 year
one on the plot was a little one 86lbs. Year one I was not very
knowledgeable (maybe a little more now no-where up to most on this forum)
and the garden was mostly weeds with clay.
I have added lots and lots of yards of organic material and
consistently use a cover crop (green Manure from Nature Valley up near the
Sierra). My plot is in Silicon Valley in California and I am space limited.
Any suggestions to improve are appreciated. I am always looking for
a simple - magic bullet solution to get to the 700 lbs. goal I have.
(although I know from doing this for years that seed, soil, persistence,
work, and knowledge along with luck are the factors that effect the end
result)
Cheers and thanks to all for sharing the wit and wisdom regarding
growing large orange orbs!
tom

Secret to the pumpkin stars,
Secret formula follows...........
Good growers + Good climate+ Good seeds+ Hard work + luck+ good
soil = big
pumpkins...... I don't believe in the magic bullet or secret
growing
technique....Many of the big growers do things differently. Climate
is a
biggey. There are many first time growers that pop big ones in good
climate
areas.......there are many good growers in bad climate areas that
haven't
grown a 500 pounder.

I believe there is another unknown factor at work too.
I feel that growers starting with new soil will have the best
results between
4-10 years of planting Pumpkins there.
People with established good garden soil that hasn't grown AG's will
have the
best results between 2-10 years.
I believe AG's take something out of the soil that does not show up
in soil
tests. After ten years a decline will be seen if the missing
ingredients are
not replaced ether because the grower knows how to do this or hits
on it by
accident. Well, that's theory based on research over the last 3
years on this
subject. Hopefully I have hit on something and will get out of this
rut in
the next 2 years. Last year was the first time I broke 500, (602),
since my
641 in 93, 553 in 92 and 617 in 91. I will using additives to help
reverse
this in 99 along with a tester in MA and one in Australia. The
person in
Australia doesn't have access to one of the ingredients though. (An
experimental Organic fertilizer I've been testing.) I used some of
these
additives in 98 at lower levels than I will be this year. Hope it
works!
