I believe there is another unknown factor at work too.

I'll tell you what, I just may have stumbled across that missing factor
this past weekend.

I was taking advantage of the warm weather and decided to turn the compost
heap.  Somehow, someway, the soil sensed what it was lacking to grow that
great pumpkin and, like good compost should, reached out and grabbed that
missing element.  Just devoured that little band of GOLD I've been wearing
for the past 14 yrs.  Won't give it back either. 
 
We'll see this year if the pumpkins take on a bit more golden hue.  If they
tink instead of thunk when tapped, grow bigger and more solid than ever
before, then we may have discovered another elusive piece of the trace
element puzzle.   (Can't hurt to hope at least)

p.s.-don't try this one at home until proven effective, it is a lot more
