Assuming you are in the USA and that you are serious...

I would assume you could deduct the expenses if you reported the income.
For example if you reported income from seed sales, prizes, or rent/sale
of a pumpkin, you could deduct the expenses of fertilizer, seed,
equipment, etc. If you don't have income from the AGs but have another
business or other income that the AGs could be reasonably combined with,
such as a farm, market garden, or plant breeding research, you could
probably aggregate the AG expenses with the other expenses for a
deduction. However an auditor would have the final say on whether your AG
habit is a business or a hobby.

Something anyone can try is donating their pumpkins to a charitable
organization. I tried donating one to a local food bank. They would take
almost anything I grew but an Atlantic Giant was too much for them. I
think I saw someone on this list mention that they donated some pumpkins
to the Oregon Zoo. (There was a writeup about it in the Orgeon Zoo
newsletter that came out recently, by the way). That person could
probably get the Oregon Zoo Foundation to give them a receipt for the fair
market value of the pumpkins they donated. Similarly, donating them for a
guess-the-weight contest at a library, children's hospital, or other
charitable organization could result in a tax deduction.

I think those of us in the USA should form a Political Action Committee to
lobby for a special Atlantic Giant Tax Credit. Something like $1/pound if
you soak the thing in Miracle Grow, or $5 a pound if you grow
organically!
