RE: Stewart's update

If you do not hate chemicals I have had great luck with Benemyl (anti
fungicide) to control the mildew.

The sappy stuff I have had some but do not know what it is nor did I have as
much as you describe.

Good Luck

	Thanks Dan, Beth and Tom
for the advice on watering I will give it a go. I have just
increased the
water by about 2 times but noticed that soil at some places seems
reasonably
	dry so that fits.
Today I noticed some white wax like emission from the smaller
pumpkin, about
one or two tablespoons full. The fruit seems okay, there is a hole
where the
stem joins the fruit but I don't think it is a problem. The emission
seems
to be coming directly from the skin at the stem end.
On the larger plant there were also small drops of sappy liquid
swetting
from the skin, I added and extra piece of shade cloth to that side
to see if
	that helps.
I have noticed that the powdery mildue has started to spread so I
started
	treating that today as well.
As scientific reports indicate that red coloured mulch can increase
the
fruit size by 20% I have painted the plank that I put between the
rows to
	walk on (that may help).
I have some photos of the patch and will try to send them or put on
web page
	later.

	Stewart
This "turning up " of the vine. Does it try to turn up more the more
you try
to hold it down? Like it just keeps getting worse and worse . I've
had the
same problem as have a few others that I've talked to and our local
weigh-off. After a while does the vine then snap off as in main vine
and or
side vines? We came to the conclusion that it was a comdination of a
couple
things for US. First was the high fertility of the soil along with A
LACK OF
MOISTURE. The lack of moisture was the major factor for me. We went
29 days
with out rain in 1997 and the vine ends we're snapping off right and
left.
leaves we're litterally burning right off. We were trying to water
but just
wasn't enough. started watering heavily every 3 to 4 days and the
symptoms
went away. Damage was already done to the plant but it still
produced a nice
500# with only 35 leaves left on the plant. Hope this helps
