Dear Friends;
We moved to new property on May 3rd 1998, about the normal time to set out young pumpkin plants. I had to work up the ground, which was in sod, resulting in a delay of 2 to 3 weeks.
Our move was only 10 miles, but we descended over 500 ft. in elevation. Our new property borders Puyallup River, which flows from the flanks of Mt. Rainier to the Puget Sound.
I had mixed feelings about leaving our hilltop garden where I had grown pumpkins for 10 years, including the world record season of 1992. Although the soil had quite a lot of clay and rock, I had built it over the years to a high level of fertility.
The valley soil is lighter and very deep, being of fine sand and silt. It takes time; however, to adjust the pH and fertility to the level favored by the giant pumpkin. The late start and lack of soil amendment tempered my goals for the 1998 season. I thought if the season went well, perhaps we might keep our string of consecutive years over 700 lbs., which started in 1992, alive. I was very pleased, therefore, to exceed my own expectations and grow 2 pumpkins of 854 lbs. These 2 fruit, harvested about two weeks apart, were grown on the same plant.
The Holland's Land 'O' Giants Pumpkin Video for 1998 illustrates many of the techniques used by champion growers to produce world class, competitive pumpkins. We visit the gardens of Lincoln Mettler, Kirk Mombert, Brett Hester, and the combined patch of Geoff Gould and Steve Radich. I was fortunate as well. to tour the gardens of quite a nunber of growers in the Ohio Valley and document their efforts in the quest for the giant pumpkin.
I like to include a flavor of the Pacific Northwest. This year we visit Mt. St. Helens. We travel back to see the mountain as it appeared before the eruption of May 18, 1980. You will witness the effects of the blast, then see how Mt. St. Helens is beginning to heal all in less than 5 minutes.
