gardening in January!!

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for the trees,Shellie they came through fine. I just got done
working on the soil in my patch, can you believe it,the first of Jan.! I
first bush hogged the area which was a previous area in the veggie garden
that still had corn stalks standing then raked roughly an acre and a half of
a friends back yard/maple thicket and spread them over an area measuring 20
feet by about 75 feet long. Spread about 2-3 inches of grass clippings that
have been piled up in the garden area since about mid October on top of the
leaves. I didn't want to use too much of the clippings due to the fact I had
to go to the very bottom of the pile to see any decaying starting. The pile
was completely dry in the middle. I then spread just enough old wet straw on
top to cover the area. Hopefully the weather will hold out so I can go get a
s*#t load of manure,(pardon the pun)in the next few days and more leaves
also. I have access to cattle farmers and turkey and chickens too. Are these
too hot for the pumpkins? (meaning the turkey and chicken).Or what if I put
it on top and let the rain and snow rinse it down? Oh,the ph of the soil as
of Nov. 15 was 6.6,should I let it go and see what the composting effort
does,or go ahead and raise it now? I thought about another 4-5 inches of
manure and leaves, what do you all think? How high shuold the hills be?
  still learning,
     Dewight
