Hmmm. I hadn't really considered the microbial part of this picture.
Interesting thought. I guess I had presumed that some natural fruit acids
(such as alpha-hydroxyacids) might be produced in decomposing pumpkin flesh
that would encourage breakdown of the seed coat and facilitate sprouting.
But it may be bacteria that participate in the decomposition process are
helpful in some way as well. One thought is that these "normal flora" might
actually inhibit some of the fungi that could otherwise cause the seeds to
rot. Another post mentioned the moisture content of pumpkin flesh
predisposing to fungal problems -- perhaps these bacteria could be
protective in this fashion. An analogy would be the way that Acidophilus
bacteria in yogurt can be protective against yeast infections. Great "food

I don't know that sprouting inside the pumpkin says anything about the
genetic quality of the seed. However, I would theorize that pumpkin flesh
should be nature's ideal medium in which to sprout pumpkin seeds. I am
saving some frozen pumpkin flesh to experiment with to see if it would help
to facilitate seed sprouting. I can think of several different ways to try
this. Has anyone experimented with this before? Any thoughts?

Tomato pulp produces a beneficial bacteria that protects the seeds. I'm not
sure if Pumpkins do the same.
