Stomy weather in NZ
Hi team
Heavy storms over here with a northerly of 80KPH plus. They
stopped after a day and then it all turned to the south for good measure.
Apart from all this the weather has been cool and wet YUK.
But I still have a few good looking pumpkins coming on. Not
sure which vines as it is all a tangled mess and I am reluctant to walk
through the vines with my size 12s. Much as in life I do not know who the
father and mother is either. I am happy to be still in the running though.
Hoping for settled weather soon.
Have a 'Parky' day

Yes Sir, I saw where you said in the Dec. archives
you have a booklet that
tells what some things can do for the soil. Coffee
grounds, is the main one
if you could. I'm making an interesting tea for
plants in hopes it won't

I think a pumpkin patch is a good idea. What
concerns me is everyone tells
you your crazy . Why? Talk to local gardeners,
farmers. i can tell you
from experience it is best not to be in a hurry.
Stick your toe in the
water before you jump. My advice would be talking
to locals, scale down
and start small! Plant a bunch of varieties in a
small 1/4 acre so you
can find the best for your area. Now if you do well
with a small patch then
next year expand...... .........brock
Hello: I have never heard of a seed list or
auction. In fact, I
don't know if pumpkins even grow well in Dallas,
Texas. Everyone here
tells me I'm crazy to turn my 1.5 acres into a
pumpkin patch, but that's
what I intend on doing. I know you all probably
see a bunch of dumb
questions from beginners, but I need help. There is
an elementary school
next door, and I want to get the kids involved in
this pumpkin patch. I
also want them to learn the right way to grow
pumpkins and not the way I
think they should be grown. Here are some of my
general questions. If you
don't have time to read this or are annoyed by
beginners, please delete
this message now- otherwise, prepare yourself....
1) What is the best
Jack o' lantern pumpkin variety? 2) What is the
best variety for my
region (North Texas)? 3) How much room do you need
to grow pumpkins? 4)
How many pumpkins can you grow per square yard? 5)
When is the best time
to plant pumpkins? 6) What preparations should I
make now, while
preparing the patch? 7) What type of physical
protection do pumpkins
require? 8) How much water do pumpkins require? 9)
How far apart should
you plant pumpkins 10) Should pumpkins be planted
in mounded rows or in
flat ground? 11) Are there any fun ways to keep
kids interested in the
patch? 12) How much should we charge for each
pumpkin when time to sell?
13) Can un-sold pumpkins be used by food shelters
or should they be
dumped/composted? Any help is sincerely
appreciated! If this e-mail is
inappropriate for this list, please e-mail me
privately and do not make my
mistake a "public flogging". I will promise to sell
every seed that I
place on any list that I post! :)- Seriously though,
I would love to hear
comments from the experts here. Best regards to

Hi Deborah! Well there is only one main company when
it comes to Nematodes,
as far as I know.... Garden's Alive.
They have their own strain (Hb) which has a "tooth"
and moves 10 times
farther than other Sc strains. (Or so they claim,
anyway).
They also offer Steinernema feltiae (Sf) strain for
control of "bad"
root-knot nematodes. I actually still have some of
the Hb strain in our
basement refrigerator right now.
I checked and the only restriction they have is that
they cannot ship to
Hawaii, but they don't mention anything about
Canada. ....Wait, i just saw
the order form, now on that it says they cannot ship
anything to Hawaii or
Canada. That's odd, I wonder why then they have the
separate "Hawaii"
disclaimer on the Nematodes when they don't ship
there anyway. Weird. Anyway
you still might want to try. At least the catalog
has a lot of information
about the nematodes, if nothing else. If they won't
send you a copy, let me
know and I'll send you one of mine. I suppose if you
really wanted the
nematodes I could try to get some for you and send
them to you myself, but I
am not sure if there are any customs rules against
it, so I would have to
check.
If you want, I could also scan the pages from my
catalog if you wanted to
read about them right away. It wouldn't be a
problem.
The address for GARDENS ALIVE is:
GARDENS ALIVE!
5100 Schenley Place
Lawrenceburg, IN 47025
Phone: 1-812-537-8650
I am guessing there might be someplace in Canada
also that might sell them.
But as far as I know, the new strains by Garden's
ALive are supposedly the
best. Hope I helped some!
