Re: Cold weather & pests
OK OK OK you all got me again I have to jump into this subject...
( god bless all of you that can "lurk in the
shadows")
Since I cannot here I am !!!!! Marigolds (Tagetes) are used for two
distinct functions
1. The scent and color attracts bees into your garden assisting to
pollinate the plants in the local area.
2. Tagetes all types roots entrap, destroy, or repel NEMATODES..... They
also attract the snails and make it easier to pick the little buggers.
I also grow Artichokes (Asteraceae Compositae) Green Globe, But would NEVER
let snails near them so I use small mounds of Corrys snail bait in the areas
AROUND my garden NOT IN IT and that does the trick.
Now for gophers and moles this is a little trick I am doing for a client in
Actin CA. She is over populated by wild cotton tail rabbits on here 6 acre
ranch. On further inspection She was also in deep with the local gopher
population. Before I was contracted she had planted 125 black cottonwood
trees (Populus trichocarpa), 50 mixed fruit trees from the (Prunis) family,
100 Italian cypress(Cupressus Sempervirens) and 25 Apple trees (Roseaceae)
Beverly Hills. She was devastated when her husband noticed the phloem had
been chewed away from the xylem / bark from wood..and the other trees were
falling over with no roots attached to the trunk.
Well, I put an order in for Euphorbia Lathyris "Gopher plant" stems and
roots have a sap that is CAUSTIC to animals even "humans", It is very
poisonous and will leave a painful burn especially if in the eyes or mouth.
That will send those little sweet hearts running for there lives It is
supposed to harm any gopher or mole that enters within ten feet of the trunk
/ root zone, and will really light up any rabbit that tries to sharpen its
teeth on the trunk !!!!!!! HA HA I love torturing those pests that make our
lives such a pain well we will see how it goes. since she only has about 30
trees left on her property !!!!!
Well, I think I got my Latin out of me for the day, well that is my two
cents.......
