Well said G man...
One more addition to the Blanton theory of seed acquiring.. I have sent
out over 500 of my 879 squash seeds, over 400 of each of my 771.6 and
679.5 from this past year, all at no cost.. Fast forward a bit here to
January 14, 2002... Same time, next year.. (this is hypothetical I must
remind you) 3 growers just grew 1000 pounders from my 679.5 seed,
making it a very hot seed. In reality, only maybe a few dozen got
planted this year.. Now it is "the hot seed"... Okay.. with the math
given to you fresh in your mind, that leaves approximately 376 seeds
that will be highly sought after. Of course my stockpile is gone,
because I gave the majority of them out for free. I would be so happy to
see some organization get a few hundred bucks for their next years weigh
off. I would be so happy to know that people wanted my seed, and also to
know that if I had them, I still would give them away, at no charge.
This is the mindset of most people out here on this list, and I can
honestly say I have never been turned away when I sent a seed request to
any grower. If they dont have the 697's, the 567.5's, the 801.5's, the
grower does his / her best to supply me (the requester) with the best he
has a surplus of. If you werent there in a timely fashion when the seeds
were in abundance, sorry - you either werent in pumpkin growing at the
time the seed was available, or you just never sent to get some of the
seeds when it wasnt a hot item.
My point is.. Sure, I wish I had 50 Ken Griffey JR rookie cards when
they were only a a few bucks , but I didnt keep them, and now they are a
couple hundred bucks a piece. Try the trading route, try the direct
grower seed requesting route, or try the seed auction route.
