If you werent there in a timely fashion when the seeds
were in abundance, sorry - you either werent in pumpkin growing at the
time the seed was available, or you just never sent to get some of the
seeds when it wasnt a hot item.

My point is.. Sure, I wish I had 50 Ken Griffey JR rookie cards when
they were only a a few bucks , but I didnt keep them, and now they are a
couple hundred bucks a piece. Try the trading route, try the direct
grower seed requesting route, or try the seed auction route.

Well said Mr. Rockwell. Aquiring the seed is  actually the EASIEST part of
pumpkin growing. People labor for two-three-more years adding
compost, minerals, clay, secret sauce, etc to thier soil to get it just right.
They spend time learning how to "read the plant". Raising the vines for
stress relief, choosing the best fruit on the vine, making a cross thats got a
good chance for success, watering schedules etc all take time and
practice......aquiring the seed is the least work yet people want the 567.
dropped in thier laps and complain 3-4-5-6 years later when they're no longer
available for the asking.
My 565* from your 879* had about 100 seeds in it...I sent out about 75 of
them the first winter to squash growers mostly because it was a decent cross
(my opinion).Surprise ! It hit this summer with an Illinois State record
823.8 lber...who knew? With the successes of
Hester, welty.Buntrock,Handy,Mettler etc squash is becomming an interest and I
gave out  a few more to specific requests...now I'm down to single digits and
have yet to get one in the ground here...will I be considered selfish if I
save a few for me? they were out there for the asking last year...on
cucurbyte seeds for free, on the list as seeds for free,...that opportunity
is mostly gone now.....I don't regret it for one minute...I think its
great...but thier down to the last few now...time for trades,etc.....(no
market for auctions of squash seeds.!...)
I do not intend to single any one person out but NOW is the time to aquire
that next Stelts801.5.......the big seed of 2003 is an unproven throw-in of
2000...PROVE a couple plants along with the hot seed your growing this
year....THATS how to bring down the auction price....if everyone grows the
same thing its going to be a bidding war....when the genetics are out there
WAITING to be grown.......just my two cents........G
ps...I got (3) 723 Bobiers at Guelph last year for the equivalent of
$2.15.....because it was a good cross from a fine grower. Not the biggest he
grew last year but apparently the most sought after right now. I am under no
delusions that this is 3x182 worth of seeds.....the best seed is not usually
from the biggest pumpkin.............
